Student nurse

Hello Everyone,

I hope you are all well?

I’m currently a student nurse, I have a presentation due which Centers around life long medical conditions. I decided after having my placement on a haematology ward and getting to know patients with SCD that this is what I would like to focus my presentation on.

My placement finished 4 weeks ago so I can’t ask for any information so was wondering if anybody could help.

I just really wanted to know what your care plan would be when returning home after pain crisis eg do you carry on pain relief, do you get any support, are there any special measures that are put in place.

Thank you x

  1. my care plan after hospital admission is pretty straightforward. I continue with my daily medications which include hydroxyurea, folic acid, vitamin D, omeprazole, promethazine, Benadryl, acetaminophen, and pain medication. Then, I continue with oral hydration, walks around the block, and yoga stretches to avoid muscle atrophy.
Then I schedule an appointment with my hematology clinic 1 to 2 weeks after the hospital stay so they can check my blood counts and see how I'm managing my symptoms at home.

    1. Typically my care plan would only be my doctor prescribing me medication. As well as resting as best I can. For the most part, the management comes down to hydration and medication.
