How to take care of a child living with sickle cell as a mother

A have a 4yrs old son living with sickle cell and it as not been an easy one, need advice and counsel on how to take good care of him

  1. I interviewed a mom of a 7yr old warrior - Elsa Franco - and she shared some amazing tips for parents that could be useful for your family. Go on YouTube and search for "Diary of A #SickleCellProdigy with Elsa Franco".

    1. I am a mother of a 14 year older who has sickle cell HbSS. One of the guides I read that has helped me make the best decisions for my daughter was Hope and Destiny: A Patient's and Parent's Guide to Sickle Cell Anemia. The book gives an excellent foundation for prevention and what you can expect. Finding a healthcare team that you can trust is the most important in the early years. Next, go to appointments on time and regularly. Some other things I do for my daughter that help are keeping her well-hydrated, avoiding freezing and hot temperatures, and eating healthy fresh fruits and vegetables.

      1. I would like to connect with you to discuss details on support. What is the best way to reach you?

        1. This is great question. Thank you for joining us! We have a couple amazing warrior parents on our site, and . They may be able to give you some advice. In the meantime, here is a link to information for parents and you can also search both of their names on our site for articles they have written on this topic. Please let us know if we can help in any other way! Warmly, Corene (site lead)
