Honored Sickle Cell Journey

I have experienced a lot of difficulties for my daughter with her school. After years of fighting against the "school system" I decided to enroll her in virtual school. This has been the best decision ever! If I knew then, what I know now, I would have enrolled her in virtual school since the first grade. Life is so much easier when you have the right resources in place. It took a while, but now we are here. I hope that with sharing my story, I can help others as well.

I remember searching for virtual schools and not being sure if this is the right thing to do. In January, my little princess was able to start her virtual journey. I explained to her that this will be a tough journey, because she needs to be independent, focused and work extra hard because it’s the middle of the school year. We celebrated her first day of virtual school and it was a great start.

My daughter started this journey with so much energy and excitement because she knew that this was going to be a great one! I always tell her, we are in this journey together. For me it’s important that she know that I’m always next to her and always able to support her and give her the best of the best.

Honor grad

When we started this journey I knew that it would be hard and maybe even frustrating, because it’s a different environment and it can be a lot. We’ve had some days that it was challenging, but she kept working harder and harder. One of the most important things that I have seen at her virtual school is the support of her teachers. All of her teachers are super kind, very supportive and are doing this with a lot of love and patience.

Fast forward to the end of the school year, my little princess graduated with honors from the virtual elementary school. This was such a GREAT moment and I looked at her proud face and my heart was so happy and grateful. Looking back I can only say that I admire my daughter a lot. She shows me that no matter what is happening, you can always reach your goal with honor! Hard work pays off. She will now enjoy her beautiful summer vacation and prepare for middle school.

How do sickle cell warriors prepare?

How do you prepare for middle school? I asked myself this question so many times. Because I believe that you need to keep practicing even if you have summer vacation. The virtual school had an amazing virtual math camp and I enrolled her for 5 weeks. During this camp the children are working for 90 minutes per day with a great teacher and hard working students.

You can never prepare enough, but you can make sure that you are doing the best you can so you can overcome most of the challenges. I’m proud of my little princess, and I’m proud of all the warrior graduates who keep fighting and keep moving forward! Congrats to all our warriors!
