Aging With Sickle Cell
Hello, I’m A Sickle Cell Warrior & I’m 26yrs Old I Had Gotten Diagnosed When I Was Just 2wks Old Of Being Born. For The Past Year My Sickle Cell Has Gotten Worst, Even With Being On Endari For It. So I Was Wondering, Does Sickle Cell Get Worst As You Get Older? Because To Me Being How Mine Are, It Seems To Me That It Is. I’m Not So Sure If It’s True Just By Going Off Of My Crisis’s. Bur That’s Just A Question That I’ve Always Wanted To Know.
I am 57. My crisis actually reduced to tolerable levels but but 7 yrs ago I sat while travelling in a bus for about 12 hrs and after that developed serious pains in my knees. It led to the painful arthritis I am trying to cope with. But definitely every HBSS will experience different symptoms and learn to cope with it. If I have to relive my life. I will take my younger years more seriously.
I have this experience. The older I get my pain and symptoms get worst.
The type of pain I felt the last time I had crisis was terrible. I just given pain injection and it got worst. It was as if my body rejected the pain med.
I’m so sorry for all the pain you are going through. To your question, every sickle cell patient is unique and no two warriors are the same. It gets better for some as they age and gets worse for others.. so someone’s story may not apply to you.. keep fighting and find out for yourself. Meanwhile, try not to think about it too much so to me the older I get the worse mines get. You’re it alone it’s totally true which is messed up but hey I just keep pushing 1 day at a time
