Celebrating Me This Sickle Cell Awareness Month

September is Sickle Cell Awareness Month and I'm choosing to celebrate me this month. I have never been the best at promoting myself. Instead, I share my story in hopes of raising awareness for sickle cell more broadly.

My accomplishments

I don't like to think that my accomplishments are extra special because I have sickle cell. Having sickle cell alone makes me special and it is the reason I'm so motivated to do something about it. Learning about my disease and how the world views my disease has set me on this path.

But my accomplishments are still pretty great nonetheless. I'm in my final year of medical school, I wrote and self-published my first book in medical school, and started a nonprofit. All because I am determined to help others who share similar struggles.

We should all celebrate

I think, as sickle cell warriors, we get so hung up and used to having to fight just to be heard, that sometimes we forget to celebrate ourselves and just how far we've come.

So, this is me celebrating me. Take a stroll down memory lane with me, find out how I got into writing, and how writing helps me. If you're interested, you can also check out my book. If you do, let me know what you think!
