Life with Sickle Cell in a Warmer Paradise: My Journey to Wellness

Embracing the sun, sipping water, and defying the odds

Living with sickle cell in a warmer climate has been both a challenge and a blessing for me. As someone who has always dreamt of basking in the sun and enjoying the warmth of tropical weather, I had to learn to adapt my lifestyle to ensure that the dream stays a reality. Over time, I have discovered a few essential coping strategies that have allowed me to embrace the paradise around me while managing my health effectively.

Sip by sip, I stay strong

The first and most crucial lesson I learned was the significance of staying hydrated. The sunshine is wonderful but coupled with sickle cell, we all know that demands a constant supply of water. I've made it a ritual to carry a water bottle everywhere I go. It's become my loyal companion, reminding me to take sips even when the heat doesn't necessarily make me feel thirsty. Through trial and error, I have found that I need to drink a minimum of 2 litres a day. This helps to keep my sickle cell symptoms at bay, reducing the risk of a crisis and allowing me to fully experience the joys of life in a warmer climate.

Dancing with the sun, but with caution

Living in a warmer paradise is new for me. Every day feels like a holiday and so the temptation to soak in the sun for hours on end is not unusual. However, I quickly realized that moderation is key. I started to embrace the outdoors during the cooler parts of the day, enjoying the warmth in the early morning or late evening. This gives me the perfect balance of enjoyment and care.

A jacket and a scarf is always near

Air conditioning is something that posed another challenge. The sudden change in temperatures between the outside and inside environments could trigger a crisis unexpectedly. To stay prepared, I make it a habit to carry a light jacket or scarf wherever I go. This simple practice allows me to regulate my body temperature effectively and minimize any adverse effects on my health. I've even found fashionable ways to incorporate scarves into my wardrobe, adding a touch of personality to my outfits while looking after my well-being.

Splashing with care

Living so close to freshwater rivers and the beautiful ocean is both a pleasure and a source of caution for me. As much as I love to splash around and enjoy the water, I still have to be mindful of the weather conditions. Overcast or windy days presented new triggers for my sickle cell. Without the warm blanket of the sunshine, I noticed that the aches and pains of a crisis could quickly set in. On such days, I choose to enjoy the beauty and sounds of the rivers and seas from dry land, where my health won’t be at risk.

Living life, sickle cell and all

Living with sickle cell in a warmer climate has encouraged me to have a new understanding of my body. I have also found the value of adapting to my environment. It's an ongoing journey of discovery, but I'm determined to make the most of my life in this paradise while managing my health responsibly. Sickle cell comes with its challenges, but it doesn't define me. I've learned to dance with the sun, soak in the warmth, and cherish every moment with a heart full of gratitude. Through the highs and lows, I'm embracing life's offerings, and I hope my story can inspire others with sickle cell to navigate their unique paths to wellness in any climate.
