The Power of Positivity: Nurturing Hope

How many times have you had to tell yourself to be positive? Personally, I have stopped counting. How many times have a medical professional told you to be “positive.” In my last medical visit I was told to be positive, but at what point was I being negative? Surely, they must understand my frustration and asking questions and getting a second or third opinion shouldn’t be associated with being negative. I have yet to find two medical professionals that agree on my health conditions.

Sickle cell diagnosis roller coaster

Receiving a medical diagnosis can be challenging, but when it takes years to reach a definitive conclusion, the journey becomes even more difficult. Facing a prolonged medical diagnosis often entails a roller coaster of emotions. It’s vital to acknowledge and accept these feelings, ranging from frustration and fear to sadness and anger. Understand that these emotions are natural and valid, but also recognize the need to embrace positivity as a guiding force. Never be overcome by any emotion but be a witness to them and let them express themselves and then they will evaporate. That’s why I’m still here. During times of uncertainty, I try to surround myself with a supportive network of family and friends, and this can make a world of difference. I lean on loved ones for emotional support, share my concerns openly, and allow them to uplift my spirits. Additionally, connecting with others who have experienced similar journeys through a support group I started online in 2011 can provide a sense of solidarity and encouragement.

Opportunities for personal growth

I’m a firm believer that knowledge is power. I intend to take an active role in understanding my conditions by researching reputable sources, consulting medical professionals, and seeking second opinions if necessary. This proactive approach empowers me to make informed decisions and fosters a sense of control over my situation, which can contribute significantly to a positive mindset. While my medical journey may consume a significant amount of my time and energy, it’s crucial not to neglect self-care. I had to engage in activities that bring me joy, relaxation, and a sense of purpose. Whether it’s practicing my meditation technique, pursuing a hobby, or spending quality time with loved ones, prioritize self-care to recharge my mind, body, and spirit is necessary when you don’t feel good all the time. Since middle school I have been using my medical diagnosis (or lack of one) as an opportunity for personal growth and active learning, which can profoundly impact your perspective. By cultivating a growth mindset I welcome challenges as opportunities for growth and development and celebrate small victories along the way. The way I have gotten answers was by asking questions and by getting another set of eyes on my conditions.

A positive mindset takes time

It took me years to learn to adapt, and grow despite the obstacles I face. For me to get to this point, it was essential to remain positive! By acknowledging my emotions, seeking support, educating myself, practicing self-care, and embracing a growth mindset, I can nurture hope, resilience, and well-being. Remember, your mindset isn’t the only ingredient that shapes your experience.
